Digital Transformation in the Agile World

Digital transformation is possible only through continuous innovation. Innovation includes the change in business models and their capabilities. This helps to learn and launch digital initiatives in line with user and market expectations.

There are five core principles to digital transformation in the Agile space

1. START WITH A TRANSFORMATIVE VISION

In a recent survey, conducted by Gartner, more than 60% of business leaders were unaware of the next generation technologies. Only 13% identified the technology in which they are planning to invest. The lack of a transformative vision is the main issue here. A transformative vision helps in mapping out the digital strategy to improve the revenue, align with user and market needs as well as track progress once a plan has been started on the implementation path. This needs to happen top down, initiated by stakeholders and senior management.

2. FOCUS ON BUILDING DIGITAL CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT

In today’s digital world, most services and products are available online and can be purchased within a couple of seconds and can often be delivered at your doorstep the same day. While this has been mundane with several providers offering these services, somewhere along the way, customer experience is often lost – to enable a good customer experience, business models need to continue to transform. Businesses now have to focus more on the customers need and expectations, by providing customer-centric benefits, to engage the customers. Digital customer engagement includes three characteristics:

– Digital technology is developed for the front-end experience of the customer

– Create a set of applications and tools to track and improve customer experience

– Providing new growth opportunities not just for the product but the experience too

3. SUPPORT THE VISION WITH SECURE DIGITAL PLATFORMS

Some of the best innovations don’t happen inside the company’s four walls. A huge R&D team is not always needed for innovation – the company’s market place is a great breeding ground for innovation. The digital world is an open architecture and having extreme connectivity. While we look for transformations external to the organization to then percolate internally, security is an area of concern. With any digital transformation it is important to not lose sight of overall secure operations especially when a lot happens outside the organization too.

4. DRIVE INSIGHT WITH DATA-DRIVEN VISUALIZATION

While bringing in insightful data to drive transformations, keep customer profile high on the track list to understand what kind of transformation is needed, to align with the profiles. Herein, leverage data visualization to enable the change.

5. EMBRACE DIGITAL AGILITY TO CREATE ADVANTAGE

Due to the constant change in the market and the need of the customer, leaders struggle to run costly projects. Often by the time a project is complete, the market trend and customer needs have changed too. To avoid these, organizations must embrace agility in digital transformation programs too, thereby bringing in a “digital agility advantage”. Digital agility initiatives need to be rooted in maximum 30-day sprints with a better and faster new iteration every time. The concept to learn, launch, relearn and re-launch makes an organization nimble to adjust and experiment. Digital agility helps an organization evolve and transform depending on the past results and feedbacks and with a foresight into futuristic trends. Herein a digital innovation framework is important for successful transformation management.

Digital Transformation in Agile is inevitable. The key here is to consider these transformation efforts as well like any other Agile product engineering effort to bring in accountability and results.
